Recipe | Homemade Spaghetti Meat Sauce

This is one of my absolute FAVORITE recipes, I make it at least monthly. It’s so easy and so delicious. There are some variants on how you can make it either via slow cooker or stove top. Or a quick version with canned vegetables or a fresher version with raw vegetables. It’s totally up to you.

Now, this isn’t our full recipe. It’s missing a very special, secret ingredient. But unfortunately that one will have to stay in the family. But I promise this is just as delicious without it. 😉

  • 12 ounces spaghetti.
  • ½ pound lean ground beef.
  • ½ pound ground italian sausage.
  • 1 teaspoon salt.
  • 2 teaspoons white sugar.
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano.
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper.
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder.
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme leaves.
  • 2 tablespoons dried minced onion.
  • 1, 28 ounce can diced tomatoes.
  • 1, 6 ounce can tomato paste.
  • 2, 4.5 ounce cans sliced mushrooms.
  • 1, 15 ounce can tomato sauce.
  • Fresh(er) Version

  • 12 ounces spaghetti.
  • ½ pound lean ground beef.
  • ½ pound ground italian sausage.

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper.
  • 1 minced garlic clove.
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme leaves.
  • 1 medium white onion.
  • 3 cups diced tomatoes.
  • 1, 6 ounce can tomato paste.
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced.
  • 1, 15 ounce can tomato sauce.
  •     

    Directions

  • Cook beef and sausage over medium heat. Drain off fat.
  • In a large pot (or slow cooker), combine beef, sausage, salt, white sugar, oregano, black pepper, thyme, onion, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, mushrooms, and tomato sauce.
  • Simmer on stove top at a low heat setting for 2 hours, make sure to stir occasionally OR 4 hours high/8 hours low in slow cooker without stirring.
  • Cook pasta according to package directions. (I prefer angel hair.) Drain. Serve sauce over spaghetti.
